Don't scoff at the topic of this helpful article. You won't think it's so obvious when your gripping doormat pad is peeking out from below.
|
A good rule of thumb
Go for 2 inches less on each side when cutting your floor gripping doormat pad. You don't want the mat to slip, but there is no reason to cut the pad all the way to the edge of your rug or doormat. If it doesn't hold, your problem is the rubber pad, not the size. |
But this last point merits discussion. Not all pads that claim to stop a rug are going to completely stop the rug from inching its way across your floor. What's worse, if you have a pad that doesn't stick properly to your rug, then it will slowly make itself visible over the course of a few days of walking on it.
You can find pretty cheap products that claim to stop a rug, often sold in rolls as large as 8 x 11 feet. This much will cost you $40, it is washable and guaranteed not to stain your floor or rug.
But even better than that ...
Thankfully, there is a product called the Wonder Grip Rug Pad. It is made of latex foam and has no holes, creating a really stiff bond with the floor without actually sticking to it. This is to prevent causing discoloration in wood and tiles. The opposite side is actually an adhesive that can be used to hold rugs down to your carpet, preventing unexpected slides and folding over when stepped on.
Either way, using a rug or doormat pad is pretty important to prevent those slapstick type pratfalls that are never as funny in real life. Have a safe day.
